We’re doing something different this year at ASSC! We’ve chosen to support Highbanks Society, a Calgary organization that supports the safety, housing and educational needs of mothers and their children. Conference attendees are welcome to bring educational toys for children ages 0-5 (such as books, puzzles, blocks, etc.) and/or school supplies for the mothers (such as pens/pencils, notebooks, binders, highlighters, etc.) If you would prefer to contribute financially or with a gift card, you will have the opportunity to do so at the conference. For more information about Highbanks Society, see below or visit their website: https://highbankssociety.ca/.
What is Highbanks Society?
The Highbanks program sets us apart. Starting with safe, affordable and centrally located housing, we seek to provide security, stability and eliminate barriers to growth. While young mothers are required to attend school full-time, our wrap-around services focus on three paths to development.
- Parenting Skills: individual and group sessions with a trained parenting coach teach early childhood development tools and strategies.
- Trauma Informed Support: Using the Philosophy of the Sanctuary Model and the SELF Curriculum, the entire organization is “Creating Sanctuary”, which refers to the shared experience of creating and maintaining physical, psychological, social and moral safety within a social environment, and thus reducing systemic violence and counteracting the destructive parallel processes that are a result of chronic and unrelenting stress in a vulnerable population.
- Community Building:Community engagement offers an ethical, reflexive, and socially responsive approach to community-organizational relationships with engagement practices that aim to both understand and be responsive to community needs, view, and expectations.
